About Sri Kshetra Trimbakeshwar

Trimbakeshwar is an ancient Hindu temple in the town of Trimbak. It is located to the west of Nashik an around 28 km.

The Trimbakeshwar temple consist of one of the twelve Jyotirlingas in India. It is believed that anybody who visits Trimbakeshwar attains salvation. There is no sacred place like Trimbakeshwar, no river like Godavari, no mountain like Brahmagiri. The reasons for its being so sacred are - Godavari river originates in this place, it's a place of Tri-Sandhya Gayatri, the birth place of Lord Ganesha, a place of the first Nath of Nath Sampradaya consisting of Gorakhanath and others, a place where Nivrittinath was made to imbibe the holy knowledge by his Guru Gahininath, a place where Nivrittinath made his brothers and sister attain the self by his preaching.

Trimbakeshwar has a very pleasant spiritual atmosphere in and around it. This town has the originating point of Godavari River, the longest river in peninsular India. The Godavari River, which is considered sacred within Hinduism, originates from Brahmagiri mountains from the route of Audumbar tree. The Brahmagiri is having its own specialty that it is made up of 'Panchalinga' that we can see with our physical eyes as well as it has caves of Sri Navanatha in it which no one can recognize. Kushavarta kunda is considered the symbolic origin of the river Godavari, and revered by Hindus as a sacred bathing place.

Trimbakeshwar is a religious center having one of the twelve Jyotirlinga. The unique feature of this Jyotirlinga is it is having three faces embodying lord Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh adjoining river Godavari. This jyotirlinga is having its optimistic effect around 15 Km. Due to excessive use of water, the linga has started to erode. It is said that this erosion symbolizes the eroding nature of human society. Thi lingas are covered by a jewelled crown which is placed over the gold mask of Tryambak i.e. Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh. The crown is said to be from the age of pandavas and consists of diamonds, emeralds and many precious stones. The crown is displayed every Monday from 4-5 pm. It has been built as per the Indo-Aryan style and has been beautifully adorned with idols and sculptures, comprising the figures of humans, animals as well as yakshas. Encircling the Trimbakeshwar Temple is a immense wall, made out of stone. In the path that leads to the temple is a large statue of a bull and one eners the sanctorum, the marble idol of Nandi Bull, the vehicle of Lord Shiva, comes into view. The Jyotirlingam is situated right in the center of the garbhagriha and from here, River Ganges trickles constantly throughout the year.

Trimbakeshwar Temple serves as the venue of the Trimbak Kumbhamela (Sinhastha) when jupiter enters in the zodiac sign Leo, which takes place every twelve years. The Jyotirlinga at Trimbak has a very inimitable feature, unlike that of the eleven other Jyotirlingas that's why it is called Adya Jyotirlinga. The pious water of Gangasagar Kunda which is situated inside the temple is being used for daily abhisheka and pooja purpose. This tank is not open for public. Situated at the foothills of Brahmagiri Mountain, Tribakeshwar Temple has the Godavari as well as Ahilya River flowing near it. Where these two rivers mingles to each other that place is called as 'Sangam' where Narayan-Nag Bali Pooja is being performed. Sri Gautam Rishi along with his wife did 32 years penance by its impact this place has become Siddha Bhoomi. It is believed that anyone who visits the temple attains salvation from the world. The temple is also regarded as the most sacred place to perform the Shraddha (commemoration) ceremony of the deceased soul. The present structure of the temple was built by Srimant Baji Rao Peshwa, in the year 1730. Since that time, Trimbakeshwar Temple has been attracting devotees as well as tourists from remotest corners of India and world.
